KHNP to support Canadian decommissioning projects

16 April 2020

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) has signed a contract with Canadian nuclear engineering firm Kinectrics to provide decommissioning engineering support, building on a memorandum of understanding on the dismantling of nuclear power plants. The contract will see Korean nuclear power plant decommissioning personnel dispatched overseas for the first time.

Under the contract, Kinectrics will hire five KHNP experts in the dismantling of nuclear power plants for one year to carry out the management of decommissioning waste and the development of process projects for the dismantling of pressurized heavy water (Candu) reactors at the Bruce, Darlington and Pickering nuclear power plants.

KHNP said it expects its agreement with Kinectrics to strengthen its experience in decommissioning heavy water reactors and allow them to enter the global decommissioning market jointly.
