INPP decommissioning evaluated

19 December 2018

The Assembly of Contributors of the International Ignalina Decommissioning Support Fund (IIDSF) took place in the United Kingdom, where representatives of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (Ignalina NPP) presented the rogress of Decommissioning Projects.

Members of the Assembly expressed their appreciation of the main achievements and progress made during the last half-year, namely: Ignalina NPP continues proactive loading of spent fuel to casks and their transportation for storage to the Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility; one of the most important facilities for solid radioactive waste management and storage (SWMSF, B2/3/4 Project) has reached its final implementation stage; dismantling works inside the Units are continued proactively. One of the key activities, i.e., preparation for reactor dismantling has been discussed as well.

The European Commission and contributors appreciated the progress achieved in the unloading of spent nuclear fuel from storage pools and highlighted the necessity to maintain the work pace and continue successful unloading. Successful organisation of seminars on reactor dismantling issues, which has involved a great number of foreign experts in this sphere, was also appreciated by the Contributors.

The Assembly of Contributors is a manager of the International Ignalina Decommissioning Support Fund (IIDSF). The fund is supported by the European Commission, as well as many European countries.
